Energy To Spare
 ACOPHONOUS
music, grunts and growls and ecstatic exhalations are the music
and sounds accompanying Grupo Corpo's new work, Breu,
unveiled at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

First introduced to the East Coast a few years ago
at Jacob's Pillow, the Brazilian troupe leaps, bounces, sways and
falls in the most ingenious and energetic manner. The sheer
gymnastic virtuosity underscored by the pulsating synthesized
sounds create a dazzling perspective.
The electric rhythm of this company is hard to
forget and the skillfully wrought kinetic tableaux are
a constant treat. One simply can't get enough of them.
Although thoroughly modern in approach, Grupo
Corpo consciously attempts to convey a sense of Brazilian culture
and unique heritage. They tour extensively, so next time you see
them advertised, run don't walk. As the French say, ca vaut la
peine—worth the effort!

World
Premieres In Lenox
HE
venerable and redoubtable American dance festival—Jacob's Pillow
in the Berkshires—consistently presents new companies from
around the world during its summer session.
This year,
in its 76th season, the Pillow will introduce England’s
Hofesh Shechter Company, Ko & Edge Company of Japan, Ballet
Boyz with former stars of the Royal Ballet, Trey
McIntyre Project, which features music by Peter, Paul and
Mary and other cutting-edge ensembles.
Unfortunately,
the otherwise totally exciting season will also offer
David Michalek’s Slow Dancing, which
consists of large-scale video projections of dancers in
practically static positions—about as exciting as watching paint
dry.
Of interest
is that Brazil this time will be represented by the dynamic
Mimulus and its tantalizing evening of Latin rhythms and
dance. And a large swath of Africa will be presented via
Compagnie Heddy Maalem’s dancers from Mali, Benin,
Nigeria, and Senegal. They'll be doing their new version of
Stravinsky's haunting "Rite of Spring." www.jacobspillow.org

100 For
Olivier Messiaen
 HE
other stellar summer attraction of the Berkshires is the Boston
Symphony (BSO) at its Tanglewood summer home. This season will
mark the valedictory performance of the beloved pianist Menahem
Pressler, who for half a century played all over the world with
the Beaux Arts Trio Quartet.
He will appear Sunday, June 29, in Ozawa Hall,
with members of the BSO Chamber Players performing Harbison,
Mozart and Dvorak.
The centennial of the birth of the mystical French
composer Olivier Messiaen will be marked with a
performance of his orchestral piece—Et exspecto
resurrectionem mortuorum (expectation of resurrection)—by
the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra under the baton of James
Levine on Monday evening, June 30, and his Quartet for
the End of Time performed by the Tashi Quartet in Ozawa Hall
on Thursday evening, August 7.
Opening night, July 5, will feature a semi-staged
concert version of Berlioz's epic opera The Trojans with
Maestro Levine conducting. The cast of soloists features tenor Marcus
Haddock, mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey and baritone Dwayne
Croft with the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra.
It was probably relaxing on the verdant Tanglewood
lawn one Sunday that prompted Henry James to remark that
"some of the most beautiful words in the English language are
‘summer afternoon.’"
