Story by Edward T. Callaghan
MAGANSETT’S
lush Indian Wells Beach was the magical setting for a sunset
clambake hosted by Teach for America’s junior
sponsors and sponsored by New York magazine.
Committee co-chairs Matthew Arendt and
Maggie Jones rounded up some two dozen young movers and
shakers to raise funds for the organization’s expansion in New
York and its efforts to improve the education and life prospects
of the city’s children.
As the sun set and the mist rolled onto the
shore, tiki torches flickered over the 300 revelers who dined on
steamed lobsters, mussels, clams, corn on the cob, ribs and
chicken served up by Claws on Wheels. Appropriately, the beverage
of choice was the fresh wines from Barefoot Cellars.
Among the guests sitting at low tables
nestled in the sand were The Apprentice winner Kerry
Perdew, New York magazine editors husband and wife Hugo
Lindgren and Sarah Bernard, Gen-Art founder Ian
Gerard, Iris Chen, TFA’s New York executive director,
educator Josie Sandler, and political consultant Andrew
Weinrich.
Also among the crowd were a number of TFA
alumni including Becky Owens and Drew Martin, who
told us how excited he was “to see the first 8th
grade class” at one of the KIPP Charter schools.
