ANKEES manager Joe Torre and his wife Ali
were this year’s honorees at Safe Horizon’s 10th
Annual Champion Awards luncheon at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York.
Safe Horizon is the nation’s leading victim
assistance organization. Lorraine Bracco presented the
awards to this year’s honorees, founders of the Joe Torre Safe
at Home Foundation, which raises awareness and develops
educational programs aimed at ending the cycle of domestic
violence.
Leading the applause were Mariska Hargitay, Stephanie March,
Veronica Webb, Malaak Compton-Rock, Betsey Gotbaum, Jane Hanson,
David Ushery, Jane and Jack Rivkin, John Fowler, Tinsley
Mortimer, Ashley Stark, Alex Donner, Nick Raynes, Bentley Meeker and
Brooke McMurray.
Among the speakers were Catherine Hawas, who received
the Liz Claiborne Champion Award, recognizing a domestic
violence survivor and the efforts she has made to transform her
life; Jennifer Goodale, a woman who recovered after being
raped on her way home from Lincoln Center; Linda Fairstein,
the former Sex Crimes Prosecutor of Manhattan’s District
Attorney’s office, who convicted Jennifer’s rapist, and Safe
Horizon CEO Gordon Campbell.
Despite the luncheon’s serious topic, everyone had a
good time with Champagne Veuve Clicquot. Designer Marc-Antoine
Dupont filled the space with giant bouquets of purple lilacs
and placed sleek, green sculptures on each table made from bamboo,
wheat grass and white daisies.
