Y Celebrates Cy
At Benefit Gala

S a child Cy Coleman attended performances at the 92^nd Street Y on the Upper East Side. Despite his death in November 2004, he is still connected through his wife Shelby, who studied music theory there, and daughter Lily, who finished the Y nursery school in spring 2005.

At the 19^th annual Y gala, which was a tribute to the late composer, Lucie Arnaz said she was introduced to Cy’s music at age 8. She’d watch her mom, Lucille Ball, star in Cy’s first musical, Wildcat in 1960.

Mike Burstyn credited Coleman for making him a Broadway star when he picked Mike to succeed Jim Dale in Barnum.

Tom Wopat, star of Coleman’s Will Rogers Follies (1991), sang It Started With a Dream from Coleman’s last show, Pamela’s First Musical. That show is based on a children’s book of the same name by Wendy Wasserstein. It is slated for Broadway next season.

Lyricist Sheldon Harnick, who collaborated with Coleman on the title song for the film Blame It On Rio (1984), said he once told the composer, "When I listened to you play, I felt all was right with the world."
