ANIMAL MEDICAL CENTER
Top Dog Gala Brings
Out Animal Lovers
Story by Roger Webster

IVE hundred of New York’s
most glamorous pet lovers gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria Grand
Ballroom for the Animal Medical Center’s Top Dog Gala. It was a
grand and glorious black-tie affair that raised over $800,000 to
help AMC provide the highest quality veterinary care.
The Black & White themed dinner dance, with décor by Bill
Tansey, included wistful lamps placed atop tables set with red
roses and expressly made animal-shaped cookies on each platter.
The night began with a cocktail reception followed by a delicious
dinner that included decadent make-your-own sundaes for
dessert. Later, couples danced to music spun by legendary DJ
Tom Finn.
The event co-chairs were Stephen and Wendy Lash and
the junior co-chairs Shoshanna Gruss and Alexia Hamm
Ryan. Committee members included Emilia Krimendahl, Wendy
Carduner, Jackie Weld Drake, Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman, Alexis
Waller and Susan Warner.
Richard Fisher, a CEO of City Investment Fund and a partner
at Fisher Brothers, and mother Emily Fisher Landau were the
honorees. Richard told about his dog Max, a Cavalier King Charles
Spaniel, who ate the "bunny" out of an oil painting,
resulting in lead poisoning. He brought Max to AMC where he was
successfully treated. It was a long and funny story.
The highlight of the program was a special guest appearance by
NYPD Bomb Squad explosive detection canine Winston, an
eight-year-old black lab.
Dr. Henry and Nancy Kissinger, who
have a Lab of their own, walked Winston on stage. The energetic
dog demonstrated his bomb sniffing skills when he quickly located
a small explosive hidden on stage, planted by his proud owner and
handler, Detective Raymond Clair.
Other guests included Nan Kempner, New Mexico’s Governor Bill
Richardson with his wife Barbara, Cynthia Phipps,
Annette and Oscar de la Renta, Sharon Bush, Eliza
and Alex Bolen, Iris Love, Bill and Donna
Acquavella, president of the ASPCA Edwin Sayres and his
wife Michele, Jean Doumanian, Andrea Stark, Daisy
Soros, Emilia and Pepe Fanjul.
Also Jamee and Peter Gregory, Topsy
Taylor, Grace and Chris Meigher, Eugenie
Niven, Marjorie Gubelmann and Reza Raein, Bill
and Kathy Rayner, Debbie Bancroft and Pauline
Pitt.
