HE
Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, which seeks to promote ethnic
tolerance, honored two lawyers, one black and the other Jewish, for
their work in inter-group relations.

Rabbi Marc Schneier, who heads the
organization, presented the awards at the Fifth Avenue salon of Dr. Mona
Ackerman.
Both awardees have a connection to Israel.
Johnnie Cochran Jr., best remembered for
his successful defense of O.J. Simpson, said that three
decades ago he spent a week at Kibbutz Lavi.
Sanford Rubenstein, who represents Rev. Al
Sharpton, accompanied the activist on his recent trip to Israel.

“I told him he should go to Gaza and meet
with Yasir Arafat,” Rubenstein related. “The objective
was to have a positive change, to stop the killing.”
