e Jews are never judged by
our checkbooks – only by our check stubs!” Rabbi Burton Shallet
declared. He was praising the supporters of Schneider Children’s
Medical Center of Israel, at a culinary gala at the St. Regis in
Manhattan.
Irving Schneider who, with
his wife Helen, founded the hospital in Tel Aviv, welcomed such
guests as Lewis Rudin, Ursula Merkin, Fanya Heller, Erica Jesselson,
Arnold Forster, Irwin Levy, and observed, “There are no
millionaires here – only billionaires.”

“The doctors at
Schneider’s heal with their hands, their hearts and our funds,”
added Rabbi Shallet, who leads Temple Beth El in Huntington, Long
Island.
Chef Shalom Kadosh of the
Sheraton Plaza Jerusalem brought a group of top Israeli colleagues
to create a special dinner for the evening. Each one presented a
different course. The Israelis were joined by such local culinary
stars as Daniel Boulud of Restaurant Daniel, Rick Moonen of Oceana,
Jean-Louis Palladin of Palladin, Don Pintabona of Tribeca Grill and
David Burke of Park Avenue Café who produced original hors
d’oeuvres.

The tasty dishes each one
prepared in the kitchen were absolutely peerless – and kosher,
too.
At the end, all the star
chefs paraded into the room, each one holding up his signature
dessert. One also held a cellular phone!
“These
chefs,” Helen Schneider remarked, “refutes the saying that too
many cooks spoil the broth.”
